چکیده

The ALOMAR SOUSY Radar operated at 53.5 MHz has been used in a five-beam configuration to study dynamical processes at gravity wave periods in the summer polar mesosphere. A case study of a gravity wave with a period of about 9 min is presented and analysed in some detail. The three-dimensional wave number vector is determined from the phase information of the 9-min velocity oscillations obtained in all beam directions and all range gates. The horizontal wavelengths in the north and east direction are estimated to be about 60 and 50 km, respectively. The echo power variations, simultaneously observed at different beam pointing positions, are investigated using cross—correlation analysis. The results show that these wave—associated variations lead to horizontal and vertical deformation of the echoing layers. The horizontal wavelength in the north-south direction, derived from the echo power modification, is in good agreement with the one obtained from the velocity analysis.

On Dynamics and Transport Near the Polar Mesopause in Summer

Some basic aspects of dynamics and transport in polar regions within one or two scale heights of the summer mesopause are examined, and the implications for local one-dimensional photochemical modeling of those regions discussed. Included is a simple thought experiment on gravity wave breaking that throws further light on the so-called "turbulent Prandtl number" question, and related questions....

Analysis and Modeling of Ducted and Evanescent Gravity Waves Observed in the Hawaiian Airglow

Short-period gravity waves of especially-small horizontal scale have been observed in the Maui, Hawaii airglow. Typical small-scale gravity wave events have been investigated, and intrinsic wave propagation characteristics have been calculated from simultaneous meteor radar wind measurements. Here we report specific cases where wave structure is significantly determined by the local wind struct...

Coupling in the middle atmosphere related to the 2013 major sudden stratospheric warming

The previously reported observation of anomalous eastward gravity wave forcing at mesopause heights around the onset of the January 2013 major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) over Trondheim, Norway (63 N, 10 E), is placed in a global perspective using Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) temperature observations from the Aura satellite. It is shown that this anomalous forcing results in a clear cool...

Satellite observations of the quasi 5-day wave in noctilucent clouds and mesopause temperatures

[1] We report on simultaneous measurements of the westward propagating quasi 5-day wave in the occurrence rate of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) and the temperature field at NLC altitude during the 2005 NLC season in the northern hemisphere. NLCs are detected using SCIAMACHY/ Envisat limb scattering measurements, and the temperature profiles are measured with MLS/Aura. Quasi 5-day wave signatures ar...

Vertical velocities associated with gravity waves measured in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere with the EISCAT VHF radar

The EISCAT VHF radar (69.4°N, 19.1°E) has been used to record vertical winds at mesopause heights on a total of 31 days between June 1990 and January 1993. The data reveal a motion ®eld dominated by quasi-monochromatic gravity waves with representative apparent periods of 30±40 min, amplitudes of up to 2.5 m s and large vertical wavelength. In some instances waves appear to be ducted. Vertical ...
